Yoga Philosphy - What is Yoga? | Carlos Pomeda | Lecture |
| Class Description : The answer is not as obvious as it may seem. In fact, the various systems of yoga that developed in India over the centuries are different answers to that fundamental question. But this workshop does not treat the question nor the answers from a theoretical perspective. It does provide a chronological overview of the development of yoga. It does explore the major systems from the perspective of their answers to that question. And it does provide a useful framework for further study. But, most importantly, it explores the various approaches to life and to practice that each system contains. Geared primarily for those with some prior exposure to the various yoga systems, this workshop will be an ideal opportunity to fill-in any gaps that participants might have as to the history of yoga and also to go deeper into the heart of each school examined, ending with a comfortable degree of basic familiarity with the major systems. The workshop will combine a lively and insightful presentation of some of the most important teachings of the various schools, including the origins of yoga, the classical formulation of Patanjali's, the various systems of Vedanta and the various approaches of Tantrism, including Kashmir Shaivism. It will also include a variety of meditative and other practices, representative of each of these schools, so as to give participants an "inside" feel for each one. Track Level: Intermediate/Advanced Activity Level: Interactive presentation, discussion and meditations |

Yoga in the Scriptural Tradition - The Secret Method of Learning to Memorize the Yoga Sutras (Part I) | Dr. MA Jayashree | Lecture |
| Class Description : Srutiparampara tradition goes back to approximately 5000 years. It has been an ideal method of learning with literally no tools like books paper pencil etc. It has been the technique by which the teacher could transfer the knowledge to the student wherever one could be without the need of even a class room. It has been evolved in those days for the transfer of knowledge so that the knowledge can be preserved and transferred in pristine purity, the knowledge acquired by Sages and Scholars. Sruti means listening and Smrti means memorizing. The Guru (Teacher) used to recite and the Sisya (Student) used to listen, repeat twice or thrice and then store it in his memory and propagate the so acquired knowledge to an aspirant by this system. In India it has been honed to such perfection that all branches of knowledge including mathematics and astronomy were also taught by this method. Even today this technique is used to teach the sastras or the technical texts and also the fine arts. By learning through this method the students will learn and get more familiarity with the words of the Sutras. The aim of these teaching sessions is to make them learn the first pada of Patanjali's Yogasutras. Srutiparampara technique is of seven levels, the basic level being that of learning the proper pronunciation and rendition of the text to be learnt. It has been the pride of India that because of this it can be claimed that Sanskrit is the only language that has been written as it is pronounced from time immemorial. The correlation between the phoneme and the script has been too perfect to be believed. In order to make the oral learning of the text easier, the Rsis have taken recourse to the metrical or poetical form so that the text is memorized with a tune. This makes the learning process all the more enjoyable. The tune helps the student to notice in case he misses any word or phoneme, as the chanting goes out of tune immediately. The singing also helps the spontaneous remembering of the next word or the next verse. This has to be experienced to be believed. This is how the traditional scholars of India even today can recite and quote any relevant passages of the Vedas, the Upanishads and also the literary works of famous poets. This technique makes one literally a walking encyclopedia. At further stages of learning one will also learn the meaning, the grammar and the commentaries which enhance one's capability to master a specific branch of knowledge in its entirety. Grammar or Vyakarana which is supposed to be the bane of language learning becomes a joy when one learns it through the Sruti parampara technique. Once the learner masters this technique of learning Sanskrit, it has been seen that one can learn any language in the world in no time and become word perfect and pronunciation perfect by applying the Sruti pramapara technique. Since it enhances ones capacity of retention and trains the vocal chords to replicate any phoneme of any language however complex it might be. It is also a fact that the language Sanskrit has been honed to such a perfection that even just chanting the traditional texts in the sutra form itself will produce the desired transformation in the human system without one being consciously aware of the meaning of what one is chanting. No doubt knowing will catalyze the effect but unlike other languages, for texts in Sanskrit intellectual understanding is secondary to experiential knowing. Attending a workshop conducted in this method by Dr. M. A. Jayashree who is a past maestro in this methodology is really an aural treat. One has to attend to believe and to experience that how one can master the pronunciation and the meaning which spontaneously flashes as one has progress in learning one of the most ancient languages of the world in which the most valuable and most needed knowledge of today is enshrined. |

Yoga in the Scriptural Tradition - Recitation of Classical Sanskrit for the Awakening of Inherent Wisdom (Part I) | Dr. MA Jayashree | Lecture |
| Class Description : The nature of any language is basically the sound, phonemes, combination of vowels and consonants. They are uttered, heard and pronounced. So it is mainly the work of the ears and the tongue. The words that are properly and clearly pronounced are heard carefully, diligently and repeated in the same manner in which it has been uttered. This is the way a language is learnt and is called Srutiparampara. Srutiparampara dates back to Vedic period and the tradition go back to approximately 5000 years. It evolved in those days for the transfer of knowledge as the best means of preserving and transferring knowledge acquired by Sages and Scholars. Sruti means listening and Smrti means memorizing. The Guru (Teacher) used to recite and the Sisya (Student) used to listen, repeat twice or thrice and then store it in his memory and propagate the so acquired knowledge to an aspirant by this system. Indian tradition is an oral tradition of passing the knowledge from Guru to Sisya through generations. Even today the Sastra-s, Music and the fine arts are taught in the above system in a traditional environment. As everybody knows that the Sruti parampara of the east is capable of enhancing not only the memory of the seeker contributing to the enhancement of one's vision but also increases the power of concentration. Chanting of verses in different meters, Sutras, Subhasitas (words of wisdom), singing songs, and repeating them several times make the mind relax and learning natural. Hence learning Sanskrit through chanting of Subhasitas and understanding its meaning expands the vision and wisdom. So it has been designed carefully to help the learning process and also to strengthen the correct pronunciation of the texts which in turn helps the student to understand the correlation between the script and the phoneme. It has been our life mission to create tools and accessories to make learning of Sanskrit easier and enjoyable to the sincere student of the world. But where is the need to learn Sanskrit for a Yoga practitioner? Yes. It is a right question. Does a Yoga practitioner need Sanskrit? The answer is YES. When the practitioner would like to know the fundamentals of Yoga, he needs to know Sanskrit because the texts that deal with the theories of Yoga are written in Sanskrit language. |
| Class Description : The most famous book on yoga ever written is of course The Yoga Sutra; but it doesn't actually say anything about how to do the specific poses of asanas of yoga. The source for all the systems of yoga followed in the world today is another book called Light on the Yoga of Sun and Moon, or Hatha Yoga Pradipika in Sanskrit. The Indian yogi Master Swatmarama wrote this wonderful explanation of the entire physical and spiritual path of yoga about 500 years ago. The text describes the purpose, philosophy, and details of practice, and the goals of yoga as a means to enlightenment. Geshe Michael Roach and Lama Christie McNally will teach a four-course from an original translation composed during their Three-Year Quiet Retreat in the high desert of Arizona in a series of four classes. Each day will be a different set of teachings, all levels welcome on any day. Asanas and Emptiness: A selection of verses from chapter 1 of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika Topics include: Hatha: Sun and Moon, why do asanas work, and the inner and outer requisites of a ocusing g yoga practice. |

The Foundation of Yoga – Why Yamas and Niyamas are of crucial importance. | MA Narasimhan | Lecture |
| Class Description : According to Maharsi Patanjali yoga is eight-limbed. For an all-round development of an individual, all the limbs must have appropriate growth. After all, the state of Kaivalya, qualified by Patanjali to be a state by which one acts without being distracted by his own or others actions within and without. It is a state of totality where the Kevali (the sole in-dweller) will neither have desire nor the normal drives ascribed to all human beings. He becomes a living embodiment of total stability, inner freedom and peace. The very presence of such a stable system in turn catalyses all other unstable systems that comes in its vicinity to move faster towards stability. Even though there has been a lot of emphasis and effort to develop and practice the three limbs namely Asana, Pranayama and Dhyana, the other two limbs Dharana and Samadhi have yet to make their impact on the practitioners mind. There has been very high emphasis on Asanas, Pranayama and Dhyana. Unfortunately there has been scant respect and very little concern about the very foundation of Ashtanga Yoga namely Yama and Niyama. Yama pertain to the social behavior of the individual and Niyama pertains to the transformation that has to happen with in the individual. These Yamas and Niyamas make their appearances in different versions among all the religions of the world. There they are termed as morals and ethics etc. But unfortunately in the practice of religions the yogic element is missing and in today's yoga practice the yama and niyama have been given a go by. As it happened with the religions of the past, this lack of emphasis in Yoga will hamper the attainment of kaivalya for yoga practitioners. It is high time all yoga practitioners and teachers start implementing the Patanjali's code of Yama, Niayama, so that one can move in the path of perfection faster. If not the very practice may create unnecessary obstacles in ones practice and may also cause irreparable damages to the system. |

The relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda | Vaidya Sri Bhagwan Dash | Lecture |
| Class Description : Both Ayurveda and Yoga believe that the individual is comprised of five consecutive layers. The Annamayakosha - the gross body made up of food, The Pranamayakosha - the energetic body and seat of longevity, The Manomayakosha - the seat of the psyche and finally the Anandamayakosha - the seat of eternal bliss. The practice of Ayurveda involves creating a healthy environment from within so the physical body, with its many organs and vital energetic fields, will function on an optimal level. Modern medicine tends to deal with the gross body alone, whereas Yoga and Ayurveda take all the five seats of the individual into consideration when treating the body/mind organism. The individual is not just skin, flesh and bone, but an intricate composite of all five layers mentioned above. Ayurveda and Yoga also believe in the concept of Karma - we come from somewhere and we are going somewhere, i.e. there are past lives and there will be future lives; by paying more attention to our karmas and our actions, we are no longer helpless creatures in a world of chance, but co-creator to our own destiny. The main focus of Ayurveda and Yoga is to create optimum health and well-being so the inner soul will be less troubled by life, and can live with greater happiness in his internal and external environments. Fundamentally both practices originate from the same tradition - to create optimum health from within so the immortal soul may be realised by this mortal body/mind organism. One may be more of a physical nature, the other spiritual, but Yoga without Ayurveda becomes blind, and Ayurveda without Yoga will be lame. This lecture will focus on how they influence each other, and how we can learn the collaboration between the two for better clarity and health in our own practice. |

Yoga Philosphy - The Tantric Universe | Carlos Pomeda | Lecture |
| Class Description : What is most unique about Tantra and tantric yoga philosophy? Quite simply, the fact that its teachings and practices are best suited for contemporary life. Departing from earlier notions of asceticism and dry scholarship, Tantra presents a sublimely inspiring view of the world and of human existence, one that incorporates all aspects of human existence: the heart, the intellect, the body and the environment. In this seminar we will explore Tantra and what is perhaps its most refined formulation, Kashmir Shaivism, from a perspective that is both inspirational and entirely applicable to our daily lives. We will dispel the most common misunderstandings about what Tantra is and is not, investigating its roots and its development, and uncovering the answers it provides to the most fundamental questions of existence, as well as the practices it developed to expand human consciousness. Ultimately, we will discover the value of Tantric practice in that it reveals the divine right in the midst of the ordinary, charging our lives with meaning. Join us for this relevant, insightful and inspiring seminar. |

Yoga in the Scriptural Tradition - The Secret Method of Learning to Memorize the Yoga Sutras (Part II) | Dr.

Yoga in the Scriptural Tradition - Recitation of Classical Sanskrit for the Awakening of Inherent Wisdom (Part II) | Dr.
