Mysore Magic is a short film about practitioners of Ashtanga Yoga and the magical experience of practicing in Mysore, India. In the past 40 years this method has spread from the home of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore to all countries of the world! Some critics argue it is only ‘a physical practice’, but dedicated practitioners claim it is a direct method to explore the inmost essence of the self!

Pattabhi Jois, who was a student of T. Krishnamacharya, repeatedly stated that ‘Yoga is one, but many paths are there!’ When yoga is thoroughly embodied it transcends styles and disciplines, dogmas and believes and elevates man into a greater clarity of being. This film portrays the graceful form of the Ashtanga Yoga practice and counters it with the internal experience of a dozen dedicated practitioners. It is shot on location in Mysore and is dedicated to the living legacy that Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) left behind.

All suffering and pain experienced on the material plane is for the purpose of purification – the gradual cleaning of the mind, heart and intellect so that one day we may at last have a complete vision of Supreme Reality and true inner peace.”

All yoga teachers and students, prepare yourselves! The year ahead will be a year of challenge. It will be a year that will provide many opportunities to really be of service to others. It will also provide us with the chance to discover how strong and faithful we truly are. In our study of yoga, we learn about the Kleshas, the mental impurities, the root causes of all pain and suffering. All five are rooted in the first, Avidya or ignorance of your own True Self, but attachment or Raga, another one of the Kleshas, will cause many great problems during this period of transition and change. We can combat this as Yogis by re-dedicating ourselves to Sadhana (spiritual practice), and, the more we learn, the more we'll have to then share with others to help them through all difficulties.

All the poses that we practice were developed based on the aphorisms found in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali written around the 2nd century BC. The 196 aphorism deal with mastery if the mind and thus achieve enlightenment. This lecture will deal with the aspects of mastering the mind. This would help achieve a profound sense of peace and wellbeing. Shri Rajpal spent over 40 years learning and studying texts, postures pranayama and is among the few who propagate the Akhand Yog practice without break so that the entire day feels like a yoga session. This is his final lecture outside of India and it promises to deepen our knowledge of why we do what we do in the yoga class.
