Markus Giess

Born in Germany, Markus has accumulated over 10,000 hours of professional training. With over 25 years of teaching experience under his belt, he is considered one of the most prominent Yin Yoga & anatomy teachers in Europe.

His unique teaching style comes from a broad background of professional dance, anatomy, yoga, philosophy, meditation, body and energy work alongside his personal life story.

During Markus’ life as a professional dancer, he studied meditation with 2 Buddhist monks. It was the beginning of his spiritual journey and an attempt to find tranquillity amongst the rat race. However, despite his meditation practise, the constant physical and mental demand as a performer led to a herniated disc and chronic back pain. His career as a dancer was over. Markus proceeded to extensively study yoga, anatomy, body and energy work. Regardless of attempts to keep the stress and pain levels at bay with meditation and yang forms of yoga, it was Yin Yoga, which turned his world up side down. After his second workshop, Markus was pain free for half a day. After 2 years of practise, the pain disappeared completely. Since Western medicine had given up on his recovery, he wanted to know how it was possible that he was pain free. He researched into back pain, Eastern and Western forms of back therapy combined with the latest research on fascia with Dr Robert Schleip. He integrated Yin Yoga into his sessions with clients suffering from back pain and the success rate of reducing stress and pain increased dramatically.
Yin Therapy was born out of a desire to bring this knowledge to a wider audience.
Together with his partner Karin Sang, Markus is the co-founder of Yin Therapy specialising in Yin Yoga & Anatomy Teacher Training and Meditation Teacher Training courses in German and English. Markus travels extensively teaching in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.
